Counseling to help you reduce anxiety, stress, anger, and self doubt in Orange County, CA

Therapy with Katherine Boelts, LMFT

You’re tired of feeling anxious and twisted up like a pretzel. You’re ready to feel settled in your mind, body, emotions and in your relationships. It’s time to invest in your overall well-being.

You’re about to pick up the phone to call, but wait! You’re not quite sure if you’re ready. Isn’t it funny how your 4 oz cell phone all of sudden weighs a million pounds. I get it. Let me start by answering some of your questions here.

Do you offer telehealth, video sessions, or online sessions?

Yes, I use a secure HIPAA compliant platform to offer video counseling. I’ve been working in this format for years, the convenience of not coming to an office works great for my clients.

What counseling services do you offer?

I offer Anger Management Therapy, Anxiety and Stress Therapy, Relationship Counseling, Couples Therapy, and Self-Esteem/Self-Confidence Therapy. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and pull from several other techniques to help my clients work through what brought them to therapy. While these are all Evidenced Based Practices, meaning they have been proven to be effective, it is less about the specific therapy approach and more about what works specifically for you and your situation.

I’ve heard EMDR works great for anxiety and trauma. Can we still do EMDR work during video sessions?

Yes, we can. With technology today it is absolutely something that can be done. My clients have had success with this format and are continuing to meet therapy goals.

How long does therapy take?

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the length of counseling, so it is difficult to predict until we begin working together. Typically, clients commit to counseling for 4 months and progress is measured monthly.

How often do we meet?

I have found that meeting weekly improve clients’ progress toward their goals. This has proven to be a good pace to make progress and implement new ways of thinking.  We actually progress a lot faster instead of taking two steps forward and one step back.

For more on weekly sessions, read this article.

But wait! That’s a lot. Why do we meet so much?

Doing healing work at the level that will sustain long-term change takes time. It’s a commitment. Clients that invest in the time get better faster and with less relapse into old patterns.

What is your availability? Do you have evening and weekend appointments available?

I see clients in the evenings and on the weekends as this typically fits better for my clients.  Rather than worrying about scheduling a different time every single week, we set aside a weekly appointment time that’s protected for you - we won’t schedule anyone else during your time.

How do I know if I’m ready for therapy?

That is a great question, Most people would benefit from therapy in one way or another, especially if you have symptoms/problems that are causing you distress. The first sign is that you are thinking it would be helpful and are here looking at a potential therapist for you. Taking that first step to actually contact a therapist is difficult! The first step is to find the right therapist for you! It is very important to the therapeutic process to find someone that you can feel safe with, open up to, and trust. That is the purpose of the initial phone call, to see if we are a good fit for each other. While I would love to be able to work with everyone, I want more for you to work with the RIGHT therapist, if that isn’t me, that is okay! If it is me, great! Who do you work with?

I work with individual adults and couples that are struggling with anxiety, anger issues, depression, relationship issues, and with their self worth and are ready to make a change in their lives.

What can I expect to happen during our time together?

Generally speaking, during the first 1-3 sessions, we will do a thorough history and establish specific goals for your therapy. The next 3-4 sessions, we will develop a tool kit for dealing with the current stressors that brought you to counseling. In the last part of therapy, we will do the deep diving work to help heal the roots of problems that brought you to counseling.

What kind of results can I expect from counseling?

My clients report that they feel less anxious, more in control of their thoughts and emotions, and less reactive in their relationships. Overall, they feel less triggered and are able to respond to situations in life, rather than be hijacked by old reactions. At the end of therapy, they feel more peace and calm and aren’t limited by old worn out ways of viewing themselves and the world. They experience a new level of freedom.

What if it’s not working?

Typically, the clients I work with start to feel better, even by session 2 or 3. If we’re not seeing an improvement after a month of working together, we will talk about it and I change up my approach and make sure that we’re really targeting the things we need to target. Therapy is about what works for you, there is no one approach that works for everyone.  And if we’re still not seeing an improvement, we want to look at potentially referring you out to another therapist, or outside resource.

What if I need to cancel our appointment or I get sick?

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, so if you need to cancel, make sure you contact me with 24 hours notice to avoid paying the late cancellation fee, which is the full session rate.

Do you take insurance?

I am not contracted with any insurance companies directly, however, I do offer a Superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement using your Out-of-Network benefits. I work with Reimbersify to help my clients get their reimbursement quickly and easily.

How do you keep my counseling and treatment information secure?

All client records are stored in a cloud based system with bank level encryption that is HIPAA certified, encrypted, and kept secure. Here is an up to date list of all the ways your information remains secure: https://www.simplepractice.com/security
